How To Create The Perfect Interior Design Mood Board
When it comes to interior decorating, the exact same space can be designed in drastically different ways by different people, because everyone’s personal style is so unique. So whether you’re decorating your home entirely on your own, or working with a professional decorator, it is incredibly important for you to have a good grasp on what the perfect space looks like to you. One of the best ways to achieve that, is to create an interior design mood board during the research portion of your customer journey.
Choose Your Medium
A mood board can be an incredibly fun undertaking, and it certainly doesn’t have to be an arts and crafts project if you don’t want it to be. The digital mood board is a great medium because it’s immensely editable and gives you the luxury of drawing inspiration from pretty much anywhere on the internet.
Pinterest markets itself as a visual discovery engine, and sources for inspiration from multiple websites and blogs, all in one place. Creating a board and organising it is child’s play, and gives you the advantage of adding other users to your mood board for collaborations. You can also easily create a mood board on Instagram. Though not as easy to organise as Pinterest, the visuals are stunning and can be truly inspiring.
Apart from sites with user-generated content, you could also use websites like Canva to design your own mood boards populated with images you’ve taken yourself, or with those you find online.
The mood board is a great tool for any decorator, and can be an immense help as you begin your design journey.
Let Your Feelings Lead The Way
Once you’ve settled on your medium, the next step is to let your feelings leads the way. Play around with some keywords when doing your research, and when you start finding images that resonate with you, use similar keywords to widen the search. Alternatively, you could also go into those specific websites to see if they might have the exact type of design content you’re looking for. If a certain design captures your imagination enough that you can picture your own home in a similar style, then you know that you’re beginning to have an idea of what you want.
Look For Your Style Soulmates
With so much user-generated content out there, one of the best things you can do is to look for social media accounts or blogs that might fit in with your own personal style. These accounts also often share personal tips, tricks and advice that could come in very handy when decorating your space. Many of them might also do part of your researching job for you, as they usually curate content from different sites themselves.
Play with Colours, Textures and Patterns
While it may be tempting to adopt a macro perspective when creating a mood board, don’t forget to also think about specifics; like colours, textures and patterns. While you might have found a few pictures online that you feel resonate with you, it might be worthwhile to pinpoint what in the design appeals to you the most. It could just be a specific wall colour, the pattern of a print, or the texture of a rug that’s drawing you in, but not necessarily the entire design.
Use Signature Objects to Anchor a Room
Every space could use a focal point. Signature objects create a point in the space that the rest of the design can rally around. If you have a piece of interesting art, or perhaps a fireplace, or a giant hanging chandelier, then it creates a point where the rest of your design radiates from, making a space vastly more interesting.
Find the Method in the Madness
Last but not least, now that you’ve done the work of curating inspiration from everywhere you can, it is time to organise what you have. This part of the mood board process is essential, because it can be far too easy to lose track of what you really want. Take the time to get rid of the visuals that don’t really fall into the design style you want so that you don’t get distracted, and then rank your visuals in the order of your ideals all the way to what you consider acceptable.
