Nostalgia-Infused Décor Trends: Our Latest Guide

May 26, 2023 | Trends

While keeping up with new trends in home décor can be a lot of fun, the truth is that decorating your home is a deeply personal endeavour. Trends may come and go, but what makes a house feel like a home really depends on the individual. The things that gave us comfort in childhood often find their way back around (as they do in fashion trends as well), but homeowners also want the opportunity to pursue new avenues of creativity and expression. This essential crux is where nostalgia-infused décor trends makes its mark. This wave of décor styles is all about a delicate balancing act between the old and the new. These are some of our favourite nostalgia-infused styles to help you mix and match your way to the perfect home for you.

Nostalgia-infused décor trend Coastal grandma style

Coastal Grandma

Saying you’ve decorated your home in the style of ‘coastal grandma’ generally gets you some raised eyebrows at a party, but this vintage décor is only growing in popularity over time. Coastal Grandma is essentially the cosy home belonging to that grandaunt. You know, the one who spent decades travelling the world – coming back with expensive gifts and wild stories, before eventually settling into a beautiful cottage facing the ocean.

The décor is both inviting and luxurious and makes one feel comfortable and intrigued all at once. The vintage pieces are both classy and mysterious and might have been picked up at a flea market around the corner, or at an underground bar in Europe in the 60s. Vases of fresh flowers abound, and there’s a distinctly nautical theme of cool whites and blues that make everything seem fresh and new. Coastal Grandma is the home we all want – full of personality – and never in fashion, while being completely in-style.

Nostalgia-insfused décor trend bohemian modern style

Bohemian Rhapsody

We’re not quite talking about the song, but this style is just as progressive. Sometimes known as Bohemian Modern, this trend incorporates a love of the warm bohemian style while keeping the general look of your home modern and sleek. Bohemian Modern encourages the use of warm colours, with multiple fabrics and patterns, often overlayed with modern features and fixtures. The use of rugs, throws and carpets are mixed in with white or beige walls and furniture.

The use of copper is a favourite among homeowners who like this style, with many electing to use this warm metal as part of light fixtures or taps and even picking out a copper bathtub if so inclined. The key here is to overlay without overwhelming, and allow for a mix of older and more traditional fabrics to gently contrast with a modern background.

Nostalgia-infused décor trend 60's and 70's mix style living room

Retro Mixtape

This vintage décor style is a distinct homage to three decades worth of intensely colourful and wild style choices – from the 60s, 70s, and the 80s. Retro mixtape is intensely nostalgic but has become a modern favourite of younger homeowners who didn’t get to experience these exciting times for themselves. Some characteristics of this style include ‘funky’ aesthetics – think colourful and oddly shaped furniture, as well as contemporary art that spoke of that time.

Colours are used purposefully and are often made to stand out on their own, without blending into a larger aesthetic. Bold graphics or neon lights are fun additions to this retro style, as are old-school knick-knacks. One of the most fun things you can do with this style is to quite literally go hunting for antique ‘treasures’ in your parents’ or grandparents’ attics, that you can turn into usable décor! And of course many of your home fixtures and modern elements (your television, speakers, or kitchen amenities for example) will act as a modern contrast to your retro-themed home!

Vintage décor can be truly inspiring, and there are a million ways to make these trends entirely your own. Have fun mixing old with the new, and be sure to share some of your wonderful ideas with us @alusplash!
