Our Guide To An Elegant Halloween Décor!
The chill has officially set in, leaves are turning, and we’re halfway through October, which can mean only one thing – we’re officially in Halloween season! Cue the sugar cookies, jack o’ lanterns, and elaborate costumes (planned months in advance, naturally), but have you given as much thought to dressing up your home?
Traditionally, Halloween décor is often ghoulish and over-the-top, but if you’re in the mood to do something a bit more tasteful this year, there are plenty of ways to get into the Halloween spirit without giving up your sense of style! This is our guide to a classy Halloween home makeover this season.
Gothic Porch Décor
Gothic porch décor is a great way to spook up your home exteriors, while still keeping it tasteful. One of the best ways to do this is with the use of dark or blackened wreaths. They come in all types and forms; including simpler wreaths with twisted black branches, or more complicated wreaths with blood-red roses weaved in. While other, more decorative wreaths are often held together with black ribbons, or even have a great black stuffed raven resting on it, spying on any visitors with its beady eyes. They’re a complete hit, and manage to convey all the Halloween décors’ eeriness with a touch of elegance.

Vintage Halloween Décor
Vintage Halloween Pieces are versatile, fairly easy to come by, and great for a Home DIY project if you’re so inclined. One of the easiest types of vintage Halloween décor are the use of shadow figures in vintage frames. These are simply black cut-outs, which convey a distinct air of creepiness. If you’d like to take it up a notch, how about doing a picture search for ghostly black-and-white pictures, printing them, and then framing them up for Halloween? Though we refuse to be held responsible for any ghostly encounters that may follow. Another fun (read: spine-chilling) idea, might include hanging up an old thrift-store wedding dress on a cloth mannequin, for a real-life vintage touch!
Metallic and Glass Decorative Ornaments.
Candles are a given for Halloween, but there are plenty of ways to step out of the norm and turn them into ornaments that are both spooky and sophisticated. Most huge home décor stores get into the seasonal spirit, and it’s far too easy to find gorgeous candle holders made of glass or metal, shaped into skulls, witches, or even creepy little skeletal hands. You could even create your own Halloween décor by placing fake insects (like butterflies or moths) in glass cases, and make your home look like every nightmarish taxidermist’s office ever shown in a horror film.
Flowers & Plants
The use of dried flowers and plants are a subtle and also truly gorgeous way of embodying the Halloween spirit. You could choose brightly coloured flowers and dry them out for a prettier Halloween décor look, or go all out with blackened stems. The key to this is of course the vase – if you have vases that you don’t use anymore, this is the time to pull them out! Even better if they’re cracked and a little broken in places. Nothing says ‘abandoned haunted house’ better than once-beautiful things.
Decorative pumpkins have been all the rage lately as well. The traditional pumpkins have been replaced by gorgeous pumpkin-shaped vases, candle holders, and ornaments made of beautiful glass in every colour. And if you’re hosting a dinner, pumpkin cast iron dishes are available too and go beautifully from stove to table. To add to that list is our favourite décor trend for Halloween, etched pumpkins. These gorgeous pieces of Halloween décor are used as a canvas for drawings of whimsical creatures, and then lighted from within. You would just have to buy a template, and then carve the pumpkin gently along those lines. The result is a front porch that looks like it was brought to life from a fairy tale.
